Russian officials say their shadow fleet LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz was hit by Ukrainian unmanned surface vessels launched from the Libyan coast on 3 March, while sailing near Maltese waters.

The tanker, carrying sanctioned Arctic LNG from Murmansk, caught fire after explosions southeast of Malta.
The vessel has been under U.S., EU, and UK sanctions since 2024.

This possibly marks the fourth sanctioned Russian-linked vessel hit or sunk in the Mediterranean. The other three:

โ€ข Cargo ship Ursa Major (December 2024, near Spain)
โ€ข Shadow fleet tanker Vilamuora (30 June 2025, near Libya)
โ€ข Shadow fleet tanker Qendil (December 2025, near Libya)
