so apparently they're getting people whose ancestors were last in canada in the mid-18th century? my ancestors left Nova Scotia in the mid-19th, is there a reason I shouldn't try to get CA citizenship???

I've taken a little time over the last couple days to look into it. My most recent Canadian ancestor, born in 1862, moved from Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in the 1870s. I can't find his baptismal record, I can find his older sister's and then read through for over a decade and not find him, it's possible he didn't get baptized, the family wasn't really religious and he was the youngest child. The government didn't register births in NS until 1864
so it's possible there's no actual Canadian record of him. However, the US records do consistently say he's Canadian (well, his US naturalization record says he was British, which is accurate for the time). And I have his father's records -- very clear baptismal record from like 1819.
probably not going to bother looking into actually doing this, it takes time and a little money (how much money depends on how you value your time, but if you try to DIY, you've got a $75 filing fee, whatever the cost for the photos, and like $20 per record from Iowa that you need to assemble).

@gzt

You may want to check with Nova Scotia regarding what records they have available, first, which you might like to have for the Genealogy anyway.

But I would definitely consider the options. Dual citizenship has certain risks - for example if you earn a lot of money in Canada, the USA wants income tax on what you earn over treaty-determined minimum (normally they only tax what you earn outside of Canada.)

But having a second passport may be useful.

@Amgine yeah I'm not presently planning on living in Canada. Taxes get very complicated for Americans there.

@gzt

Eh, it's not bad if you work in whichever you live in, and do not make six figures..

I guess they only complicate things for people they think are worth the time. (Says the Minnesotan who moved north a long time ago.)
