It's always the same fuckin instances I'm blocking spam accounts from, every time one of these spam waves happens. I get it, we probably benefit from some instances having open registrations, but if you're going to run an instance that way, at least make sure you're on top of the bots
Like, that's what happened here. Ideally, triggerphrase would still have open registrations - I think there's a real benefit to removing even the small barrier to entry of having to explain yourself when joining an instance - but when the spam waves started happening, I put it on manual approval, because I cannot guarantee quick response times 24/7, and that benefit isn't worth my instance being abused to make everyone's experience of the fediverse worse
@HabitEXE I wonder if this is a consequence of Big Tech where the expectation shifted from human approval of sign-ups and possibly having one's first few posts filtered (I was on a forum like this) to automated sign-ip flow -> instant posting and relying on algorithms to hide spam
@steeps I think there was a time pre-social media where you could easily be online without encountering approved sign-up procedures, but I would definitely say that in the social media era of online community, a lot of people basically do not expect to experience moderation whatsoever
