IRAQ | Rumaila Oil Field - Production Suspended

Production at Rumaila, Iraq's largest oil field and the world's second-largest, has been fully halted as of today, 03 March 2026.

Iran's IRGC has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed and struck at least three tankers with drones, halting tanker loading at Basrah terminals. In response, insurers have cancelled coverage for Gulf transits and ships cannot legally move.

With exports stopped, storage tanks have overflowed and production has been fully suspended. Over 150 tankers are now anchored off Fujairah and in open Gulf waters, waiting.

The shutdown is not isolated. Gulf Keystone Petroleum (US), Dana Gas (Dubai), and DNO (Oslo) have all suspended Kurdistan Region operations on security grounds. Kurdistan oil exports via Ceyhan are also reported halted.

Rumaila produces a significant share of Iraq's total oil output.

A prolonged suspension has direct implications for federal revenue and global supply.
