@11ty wayyyy too ahead of April 1st (hopefully we did not have BuildCanon nor Eleventify)
@11ty — congrats! Gonna miss the name, but hopefully this means good things for the software, which will smell just as sweet.
@11ty Becoming? Will i be able to get just 11ty?
@catraxx 11ty is renaming! But we’ll still maintain compatibility with your existing projects, plugins, and build commands.
@11ty Ok, but the kickstarter sounds like there is a lot more to it now, i don't need all that, i just want 11ty.
@catraxx yep, those are Pro features, which will be a separate but complementary offering
@11ty Congrats! Jus backed. Would LOVE one of those desk mats with just a possum and a balloon.

@11ty this is going to drastically change my tech talk "This goes up to 11ty" 🫠

But in all seriousness, congrats! Looking forward to the next phase...

@11ty I think @zachleat deserves a FIFA Oscar for his brilliant performance as that possum.

@brucelawson @11ty @zachleat

Except FIFA Awards mean very little these days and Zach deserves a lot more.

@11ty Read the project & have a question: What does "Safer content updates" mean in the "Pro capabilities" section? Is this related to pages/blogposts or related to updates to the SSG? Also like @bobmonsour said in the kickstarter comments: Where will the free open source version be hosted? Update/development wise will it be the same as pro? I'd be totally fine if it's similar to what obsidian's doing where subscribers get access to earlier versions that eventually become part of the open build.

@QueensRambleRoomFFCASH

“Safer content updates” is a reference to the collaborative editing piece (without requiring developer intervention!)

I did leave a comment for Bob that might help: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fontawesome/build-awesome/comments?comment=Q29tbWVudC00NjgxMjY5MQ%3D%3D&reply=Q29tbWVudC00NjgxNDk0MA%3D%3D

Specifically, the open source project will continue to be open source (not any early access limits there)

@11ty Alright thank you for answering. 👍
@11ty it is funny that Premium Features seems to me as "do not use features" based on AI. As in Affinity Studio i.e. So it is cool. More seriously I would rather prefer 11ty to set on a really theme system for everyone instead of developing for few people. But I guess this is a way to stay alive
@11ty Congrats @zachleat! I hope this brings all the funds and support (and time off) you’ve wanted/needed all these years 💚
@lynnandtonic @11ty Thank you Lynn! Appreciate you!

@11ty I have a question that may seem stupid (or maybe hasn't been thought about). Why don't you use some (or all) of the balance in the Eleventy open collective for this?

I believe that the open collective is there to support Eleventy, so why not support it in what it's becoming.

Open collective balance link for reference: https://opencollective.com/11ty#category-BUDGET

cc: @fontawesome who may be better suited to answer this question

(I'm happy to post this as a Kickstarter comments if that's a better place, just let me know)

Eleventy - Open Collective

A simpler static site generator.

@gMoon A fair question and I wish it were possible! Unfortunately our fiscal sponsor on Open Collective would not allow Kickstarter contributions as expenses (as Kickstarter by definition is prepayments), per the documentation: https://docs.oscollective.org/for-hosted-member-projects/spending-money-and-getting-paid/expense-policies-and-limitations
Expense Policies and Limitations | Open Source Collective

What Open Source Collective can and cannot pay

@zachleat thanks for answering the question Zach. One more question (that I can think of right now) if you don't mind, when will Eleventy / Build Awesome fully just be known as Build Awesome?

As I (and many others) have blog posts that mention Eleventy, and it would be nice to know when we should change the name by. I may even write it to say Build Awesome (formerly known as Eleventy).

@gMoon we’ll be making changes to the docs in the coming months to update the name. To be super clear, Eleventy v4 will be known as Build Awesome v4 and we’ll keep compatibility with Eleventy plugins/ecosystem and CLI commands moving forward to make the transition as seamless as possible for folks.

@zachleat @gMoon I have a question related to this if you don’t mind; what actually happens with the Open Collective?

Will it continue as it has been, or gradually stop, now that the project has renamed and is being funded by kickstarter and pro-tier subs? (That’s probably an over-simplified way of looking at it - but to be clear I’m not asking with any snark)

@hejchristian @gMoon The Open Collective will continue, and we’ll continue to use the funds for the open source project and community expenses. I’ll post more about this on the 11ty Blog soon

@zachleat @gMoon

Awesome, thanks Zach :) I look forward to learning more on the 11ty (Build Awesome? 🙃) blog, and I'll continue to contribute what little I can to the Open Collective too 💜

@hejchristian @gMoon I’d encourage folks to support the Kickstarter if they want to chip in! (which I believe you may have already done, so thank you!)

@11ty Oh no. While I am happy that you have consistent income to work on 11ty, I have very mixed feelings about the Open Core business model. Mainly because I have seen (very closely) how it caused multiple good FOSS projects to collapse, as business demands for investment payback made things difficult.

At the same time, 11ty's code architecture allows for a lot of flexibility, so the paid extensions business model could work reasonably well. I just hope it would not cause conflicts of interest for keeping the core functionality working properly. 😓

@11ty There is also question of whether people still feel safe to contribute to 11ty, as now it has gone full circle from a community project to a commercial platform.
@autiomaa well, I can only say that I’m personally dedicated to proving that this model will work, and both Font Awesome and Web Awesome have shown that the company is also dedicated to this as well for the long term. Please make sure you read the Risks section on the Kickstarter, as I did write that myself and it reflects my feelings on it
@11ty that name is even more unsearchable than the previous one lmao
@navi maybe it should be Bu1Ld Awesome
@11ty Oh, that sucks! Signed up for a notification for the relaunch!
