GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales dragged into primary runoff after affair allegations

Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas was forced into a primary runoff with his GOP opponent as he faces calls to resign over allegations of having an affair with an aide. The three-term congressman is now in a rematch against Brandon Herrera, a gun manufacturer who narrowly lost to Gonzales in the 2024 primaries. Neither candidate secured more than 50% of the vote in the four-way primary to win outright. Gonzales entered the nation’s first big primary of 2026 under pressure from fellow House Republicans after published reports last month that alleged to show explicit text messages between him and the former staffer. Gonzales has said he won’t step down.
