In fairness this isn’t the first time. 5e was “DnD Next” (terrible name as well) during its development.

@Zonetrooper @Jeeve65 D&D 5.5e is much better than the alternatives. They did that in third edition with D&D 3.5e, so there's no reason why they shouldn't do the same now.
