BFI is elevating film preservation and conservation with this focus on heritage science. They're currently recruiting for a Heritage Science Manager https://www.scope.org.uk/jobboard/heritage-science-manager-080126
NOW: Jörg Houpert, Cube-Tec, on inspection and digitisation of 100,000 film reels. InspectionSCAN https://www.inspectionscan.one/en
Pitch for using InspectionSCAN workflow vs scanning uncompressed film. It all boils down to the file size (storage volume) required. Smaller size files makes it more feasible. 300 rolls of film per work day as baseline. Less than 1 TB per work day. 1 million analogue reels can be done in 13 years.
My notes: as long as it's clear it's not a digital preservation project
David Barnard, Gencom, on designing modern film preservation lab at NARA Motion Picture Preservation Facility.
Highlights:
- 13 TB/hour
- Separate media traffic from IT. Media migration is Operational Technology (OT), not Information Technology (IT)
- Storage and network does not have to be bottleneck
My notes: Another recommended watch. So many questions, so little time.
