It’s my 40th birthday month and I’ve been considering what to buy myself…leaning toward finally getting an OLED TV 🫣

Dear @siracusa and everyone else, what is the TV to get right now? 70 ish inches

@stephenrobles Do you have any concerns about brightness? Like, is there a lot of direct sunlight in the room and on the TV? Or is the lighting mostly under your control?
@siracusa Zero direct sunlight, lighting 100% controlled

@stephenrobles The bargain-hunter pick: Sony A95L (while supplies last!) https://amzn.to/4aYDSQ3

The aesthete pick: Sony Bravia 8 II https://amzn.to/4tVNyDA

The gamer pick: LG G5 https://amzn.to/4u6rsyl

The patient pick: wait several more months for the 2026 TVs to be released and reviewed.

@stephenrobles I'd go for one of the Sony TVs because I like their software (or rather, I like how easy it is to avoid/ignore their software and use my Apple TV), and I like their processing and upscaling best. But the LG G5 has four HDMI 2.1 ports (the Sonys have only two 2.1 plus two lesser HDMI ports), higher gaming refresh rates, and lower input lag, if that's important to you.
@stephenrobles If you have any questions about these or other TVs, let me know!
@siracusa I was eyeing that exact LG G5 so glad that comports. I use a receiver so HDMI ports aren’t an issue, but I was thinking of upgrading that too. I use a Denon 7.1 Atmos receiver from 6 ish years ago, any suggestions if I want to upgrade that too?
@stephenrobles If your current model does what you want, I see no reason to upgrade. (But maybe attach any game consoles directly to the TV instead of going through the receiver.)

@siracusa hm the latter would mean running 3x more hdmi cables in the wall 😅 PS5, X Box, Switch 2.

My old receiver fails at HDMI CEC, so turning on the PS5 doesn’t turn on the receiver/TV etc. was hoping a newer one with the latest HDMI standards would do better. We’ll see.

Likely going with the LG but I’ll let you know! Thanks again 🙏🏼

@stephenrobles No CEC is either a blessing or a curse. For a new “normal” receiver (i.e., not something like Sony’s “smart” system that tries to work with speakers in any positions) with passive speakers, the Onkyo RZ30 is a pretty good deal (particularly with Dirac Live included, which does a really good job of automating adjustments). https://youtu.be/BFplelXHHu8

(I have an older Pioneer model that also came with Dirac.)

@stephenrobles @siracusa if gaming is the main priority then of course the lg however the processing qualities of Sony is insane especially if you likely to watch any non 4k or content that is known to be a bit loose in terms of quality. It’s something which I think doesn’t get the attention it deserves in this current mad chase for “brightness” metrics. It’s akin to 0-60 times without appreciation for handling. If only Apple partnered with Sony instead of tcl 😭
@InterfaceEngineer @stephenrobles LG’s processing has improved a lot recently, so the gap between LG and Sony isn’t as big as it used to be.

@siracusa @stephenrobles i assumed (wrong of me to do so) that Stephen would want the best in class. Continuing Neutral talk, it’s akin to Merc AMG / BMW M car vs Porsche / Ferrari. Former are great & nothing knocking em at all, but it ain’t the same as the latter - if that makes any sense

possible atp topic: hypothetical scenario where Apple partnered with Sony or Panasonic at the flagship TV segment seeing as Z95b is continuing in 26’ & the a95l is still great?

@siracusa and do you have a best buy affiliate link? on sale there
@stephenrobles I don’t. Just buy it wherever you want, no worries.
@stephenrobles Just ~25 days until the LG G6 is available… https://youtu.be/82InNlCqxlU

@siracusa as a non-tv tech nerd, is it a big enough deal that I should wait?

@stephenrobles @siracusa what are the prices for each? (sony, lg g5 & preorder prices for g6)

If you can have 77” or 88” it’s worth noting the larger C series “C6H” comes with the new tandem panel as well

@stephenrobles Ehhhh…it’s so close, I’d wait if I were you. (Or I’d get one of the Sony TVs I recommended, since the 2026 Sony TVs won’t be out for a while.)

Of course, if saving money is more important, you could probably find a cheaper G5 now that the G6 is so near.

@siracusa @stephenrobles I’d definitely recommend Sony. They have fantastic picture quality. And ours seems to be very reliable. 20 or so years old and working perfectly
@siracusa I saw stock depleting on the G5 in various places so jumped on it. Used your amazon link too, will report back!
@stephenrobles you are going to love it!
@stephenrobles you got money money 💰
@stephenrobles I forgot to mention that I’m not sure if the G5 comes with a stand. (They expect most people to wall-mount it.) If you need a stand, you should double check.

@siracusa I’m wall mounting so all good!

Also got a few pairings…went with an open box updated Denon for 4K120 and HDMI 2.1

@stephenrobles did you go for 77” in the end? Forgot to check the links, I would’ve mentioned the shear size advantage the G5 has over the current in stock Sonys is the immersion factor, no brainer in that regard
