The world is getting a reminder, once again, of the enormous economic and geopolitical risks associated with dependable on fossil fuels. And a reminder of the incredible independence that renewable energy provides from those risks.

@petergleick

And how it pays off to be best friends with the US president so he tells you exactly when is a good time to buy fossil shares.

@petergleick
How can the world reduce it's dependence on fossil fuels?

@nuwagaba2 @petergleick Solar photovoltaics and wind. Is already happening. And batteries. All these are getting cheaper exponentially, following friendly learning curves.
Edit: note that photovoltaics + batteries also work off-grid, in small units.

And then, electrification. Electric cars and bikes for transport, heat pumps for space heating/cooling. Stop burning stuff.

@petergleick Hope the New Zealand government reads your post!
@petergleick renewable energy is such an epochal game changer for world politics and even social organization. Our love affair with energy itself is not likely to abate much, but it's decentralized production and distribution brings us back to pre fossil-fuel industrial landscapes. But beware of the choke points in the production of renewable energy infrastructure...

@petergleick I think autocorrect may have ambushed you on this post.

Also I think there may be some resistance to change as land and air power still require fossil fuels. Government won't support change if it means disarming. That and their flock demand the right to drive trucks the size of WW2 tanks.

@petergleick If the west insists on military confrontation, maybe it would be a good thing for there to evolve a united front from all oil producers, and Muslims, everywhere, to turn off the taps, completely, to USA, Russia and Israel. It might possibly halt aggression and loss of life and, as suggested, force realisation the entire World needs to cooperate, in peace, to generate renewable energy and fight climate change. The extant economic model needs complete reworking.
