every chat protocol made after IRC persistently keeps you in your chat rooms, even when you’re not connected to the server at the moment. this is generally considered to be a good thing

however, consider: this removes the peak comedy of someone saying “let me try this out real quick” and getting loudly kicked out of the room by their own OOM killer taking exception to an unchecked memory leak.

so, it;s impossible to say if its bad or not

@mwk Or in the channels with lots of network operators when suddenly everyone behind one AS ping timesout, and you go ah something broke their :D

@evey @mwk there’s something magical about 5-10 people quitting IRC every time I restart sakamoto xD

or 150+ sessions quitting if bgp.wtf’s upstream shits the bed

@mwk not to mention the kramer entrances when somebody enters at a really ironic time
@mwk we will never again experience the joy of LOUDBOT screaming "I CAN'T HEAR YOU SOLDIER" and kicking you from the chat room
@mwk it also removes the satisfaction from a ctcp ping +++ATH\r\n
@mwk Those were the days?

@mwk also:

<l33t_net_guy> ooh! new ipchains flags!
*** l33t_net_guy has disconnected (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)

@mwk we also miss the casual greeting as you walk into the room, rather than your ghost suddenly saying a few words before going back to silence

and the fun of getting people to type "/disco" or press Alt+F4 because it'll sort things out :P

@mwk
<TerrorBite> let me try something out real quick
*** TerrorBite ([email protected]) has quit (Connection reset by peer)
@mwk
*** TerrorBite ([email protected]) has joined #fediverse
*** ChanServ sets mode: +v TerrorBite
<TerrorBite> well that didn't work
