We found a black kitten in a parking lot near us and we’ve been feeding them every night (this kitten hisses at us if we get too close, so we’re trying to build trust). Today we saw (who we assume are) the mother and the father of the kitten. 🐈‍⬛
I think mom and dad are too feral, but the kitten may still be in the socialization window.
I bribed the kitten with churu and learned that they’re REALLY food motivated.

Void kitten updates:

• He drank from the water we brought for the first time! He was so thirsty tonight!
• I have a feeling he’s more skittish whenever he’s hungry. Once he’s full, he actively asks for pets.
• He purrs so much whenever my spouse and I pet him at the same time. He even let us pet his belly!
• He licked me and bit me very gently to tell me he wanted to play. It was the first time we played together!

I think we’re nearing the time he won’t resist if we bring a pet carrier.

It’s taking void kitten less time to recognize it’s us and not hiss or run away. When we’re about ~30 meters from where he is, we see him poking his little head out to look for us. We gave him plenty of treats for being so brave: not running away whenever someone else passed by (instead choosing to get closer to us for safety); allowing pets less than 5 minutes in. He let my spouse pick him up briefly. In the meantime, we’re looking for pet carriers and a place to have him checked and neutered.
My spouse has never had a cat before, so it’s all new to him. I’ve had a couple throughout my life, but I’ve never rescued one myself. We’re slowly joining a circle of animal rescuers and carers as we started to help a neighbor with feeding about ~40 street cats a few months ago, so we’re confident it’s going to work out.
Void kitten let me pick him up for ~5 min. We're pretty sure he'll do anything for churu—jumping into a pet carrier, letting us clip his claws, etc. We tested some of those waters today, but he's still a little bit scared. We really need to finish our apartment renovations to bring him home safely (we're cat-proofing it too).
Void kitten was waiting for us, recognized us immediately, and showed us his belly for the first time.
Void kitten says hi fediverse.

We talked to an employee of the place where void kitten usually spends the night—no one has claimed him, and he’s indeed very new to the neighborhood. He was playing with a chicken bone when we arrived, though, lol.

He isn’t the first cat to appear there. She told us both employees and owners took care of another cat for 7+ years; that cat was named Comendador. That only ended because one of the employees moved to another city and asked to take the cat with them. ❤️

We started walking around the neighborhood at night when I had my first anxiety attack last year—there are a couple of pharmacies nearby and we went to look for something that could help me while I waited for an appointment with a psychiatrist. Then we started feeding cats at night, and I started so many medical treatments over the past 6 months I became a frequent visitor of those pharmacies. We found void kitten after coming back from one of those walks to the pharmacy. We had food.
Funny how things like that happen, right? We probably wouldn’t have crossed paths if it weren’t for a whole series of events last year that made me prioritize taking care of myself. And now we care for others—kittens included.
Void kitten now enjoys touching noses with us. And it broke my heart not to bring him home yesterday; I cried so much. We’re going to try to speed things up at our apartment to finally get him off the streets.
Void kitten has been purring louder and louder. He also enjoys resting his chin on my arm as he gets all the pets he needs from us.
We found _another_ cat.
We’re going to bring void kitten home pretty soon. 🖤

My classes started this week, so we weren’t able to feed void kitten until much later in the night. The first day of classes he patiently waited for us to come back from uni; the second day (yesterday) we left my university campus much later than usual we couldn’t find him.

I cried.

I cried so much. I was afraid something had happened to him and we had failed him.

Today I started my day super sad. Spouse and I went for a walk and saw this majestic and friendly grey kitty.

When we arrived home, we saw every single person we’ve become friends with in our neighborhood in this past month — everyone who’s outside whenever we feed void kitten because they’re walking their dog or enjoying the fresh air.

Then a few hours later, we went to see if we could find void kitten again. We walked to the clinic where we usually see him and he wasn’t there; he wasn’t in the parking lot either.

We decided to walk around the block because sometimes, when we turn around to go back to our apartment building, he just ✨ appears ✨. And as we were turning around…

We see him running towards us, meowing to get our attention. 😭

We go to his favorite spot and I’m almost crying again at this point because I was so worried. He eats and purrs and asks for pets from the both of us.

A neighbor from the apartment building in front of the parking lot comes to us to introduce herself and tell us she’s been watching void kitten for a while. She gives him food whenever we can’t go. She sees him waiting for us every night. And she’s really fascinated by the whole thing because she’s never seen a cat love two people so much.

So spouse and I decided we can’t leave him behind anymore. Void kitten needs to come home.

Our apartment isn’t ready yet, but we talked to everyone in our current apartment about bringing him earlier than planned and they agreed. So we’ll bring him here.

We believe that other cat I mentioned a couple of days ago is void kitten’s mama; she’s thinner than the first time we saw her. We suspect she was pregnant back then, which also explains why she was so skittish. We were told she had babies a couple of weeks ago, and since then she’s been observing how we interact with void kitten and accepting food we leave for her.
Void kitten’s mom.
He’s home with us.
We didn’t even need a pet carrier to bring him home; I picked him up and we walked with him in my arms the whole way back to our apartment. He was such a good boy taking a bath and has no fleas (!!).
The bakery is officially open and he’s very serious about his job.
What a weird night for void kitten, eh? The two people who fed him for over a month brought him to a big weird place, then a small weird place. Then they fed him what was probably the best meal of his life so far, gave him a bath, helped him get dry, put him in the fluffiest bed he’s ever slept on, and activated night mode (i.e. turned off the lights) where he’s now sleeping peacefully.
We’re so happy. 🖤
It took him a little while, but he used the litter box! And he found a spot he loves on our couch. Caught him sleeping and purring. 🖤
🥺 first time he sat on my lap on his own.
We arrived from our neighborhood cat watch shift and void kitten was behind a couple of pillows, belly up, legs stretched, relaxed af. Baby is living his best life now.
He was born to be a fediverse star.
For reference, here’s the very first photo I took of him on January 31.
Pure bliss.
Coming home to a kitty meowing because they’re so happy to see you again is the best feeling. 🥲

@anna

Blessed voidbaby. So glad y'all were able to earn his trust and give him a home.

@anna
and what is (or gonna be) his name?
@bituur_esztreym We’ve been calling him Morceguinho for weeks!
@anna que trenzinho lindoooo
@anna this is so goooood  I'm so glad you can give void kitten a wonderful home
@vi And we’re so happy he chose us! A lot of folks in our neighborhood love him and attempted to feed him; we were the only ones to successfully approach him.
@anna that's even better!! The feeling of being chosen is so good
@anna such a beautiful experience to read about. You did an amazing job building trust with him. Sending many good thoughts for the next steps with him.

@anna precious baby 🖤🖤🖤

Just fyi, as someone who also picked up a sweet void kitty and carried her home in my arms, you should probably take him to the vet tomorrow...

@sofiav That’s what we’re planning to do! We’re already have one we trust (our cat rescue group has taken a lot of stray kittens to them in the past months).
@anna yay!!! Congrats 🖤🖤🖤
@anna congratulations! Voids are the best! 🖤🖤🖤
@anna crying. This is good news and I'm glad you're giving little one a home.
@emma We’re super happy to have him here!
may you have a great time with your child 😉
@anna yay, welcome home void kitten!
@anna happy void kitty day!!!
@anna This looks almost like a Simon Stålenhag drawing!
@ranjit Yeah! It reminds me of the game Stray as well. This “state of disrepair” ambiance against her cuteness.
@anna and void kitten is gonna take care of you (as he does for a while - kitten's way ofc -, if i read the thread well ;-P beijocas a void kitten e a tud@s
