@RueNahcMohr A lot of people still use weather radios, especially in more rural areas. An hour and a half drive from downtown Ottawa you'll be completely without cell phone coverage and still in a tornado zone in the summer.
Weather radios can be left in standby mode and powered with small batteries for long periods of time and automatically function as alarms when severe weather occurs.
Decommissioning the system is a very short-sighted and bad decision in my opinion.
