Any #hamradio and #shortwave folks

Had a question from @Crowjane about a good basic shortwave receiver. Anyone have experience with the cheaper battery operated units?

(My preference is the Kenwood R-1000 or using my ham radio receivers, of course... and not too impressed with the old Radio Shack and similar shortwave radios, in terms of capability -- very primitive vs. even an SDR).

That said, I'm sure there are some modern, digital DSP shortwave receivers with AM/FM/USB/LSB support? Ideally, small battery operated units with built in antenna.

@ai6yr @Crowjane I think a common answer is something like the Eton Elite Executive, which I have. Functions well, but you'll want the manual handy. Too small and overloaded buttons.

The most fun I've had lately is with the ATS Mini V4, an in-the-palm-of-your-hand radio. BCB thru the FM broadcast band, AM/FM/SSB/CW. Fits in your shirt pocket.

@Alrescha @Crowjane Oooh, ATS Mini V4 definitely looks like a good one.

@Alrescha

uh-oh, made mistake of looking at ATS mini v4. now, $40+tax later, hippity-hoppity, one's on the way.
