LumenTale, a monster collector that delivers what matters most: strong monster design

the one monster collector

Dude, you don’t have to disparage other games to promote another. And there’s plenty of other games that do get monster design right. Go look at Coromon or Palworld.

And while LumenTale looks good, I’m not fully sold on the creature design. A lot of it looks overly detailed, like the newer Pokémon games, like everything has swirls and/or spikes.

There’s something to the phrase “less is more”. An overall simpler design with 1-2 defining features does a much better job at making a particular creature design stand out, even amonst a large roster. If everything has tons of details and flair, they all start blurring together.

Personally, I think creature aethetics that are closer to Gen 3 or 4 Pokémon strike the best balance. And some people would argue with me on that point and claim that Gen 2 or even Gen 1 designs are the best. And you know what? That’s fine. People can like what they like because it’s subjective.

And no, that last part isn’t contradicting my first part. I’m giving reasons as to why someone might not like the newer style. For some it’s not a factor, for others it’s a big deal.

Point taken, I’ve edited the title. It was not my intent to disparage others, I’ve actually enjoyed playing Coromon.

The entire review is subjective and to be taken as such! Nothing I said is objective. This is just my favourite in a long time and I wanted to convey that - admittedly I fucked up the wording.

Cassette Beasts is my personal favorite creature collector. I’m excited to try this one out when it eventually comes out.
SMT monster (demon) design makes the rest of them seem like they were drawn by children.

Oh man I gotta try this demo soon. Hopefully thw story and characters are more interesting than Cassette Beasts because I played about 3 hours before being bored and never picking it up again. I just didn’t care fore the world design and people…

But the designs look very nice in this game and the protag has their own personality, which is a bonus, so I think I’ll love it. And I love that they’re recreating how the Pokemon gen 5 battle perspective looked and animated!

Thanks for sharing, this one was flying under my radar! There are a couple of things about monster collector games that I wish developers would improve, and I’m not sure how this one handles them:

  • Balance is the core of any good RPG. The mathematics behind monster types, stats, and matchups need to be well-designed and internally consistent. If the numbers don’t make sense, the whole experience falls apart.
  • Monetization can make or break a game. Please, no pay-to-win mechanics, no predatory microtransactions, and especially no gacha systems. A fair, upfront pricing model goes a long way in building trust with the community.
  • If it includes multiplayer and PvP, design it thoughtfully. Competitive modes need careful balancing to prevent a small meta from dominating, and the community tools (reporting, matchmaking, etc.) should actively work against toxicity. Make it fun , with the option to challenge other using your full team (maybe 6 monsters?), normally they force you use max 3 or 4.
  • QoL features are non-negotiable. Fast travel, box management, in-game encyclopedias, and autosave are small things that make a huge difference in comfort and replayability.
  • Thanks again, I’ll keep an eye on this one and the upcoming Nexomon 3!

Monster Sanctuary is your best bet for hitting those points. The game is pretty lackluster in a few ways (graphics, storytelling) but the gameplay is really well-designed and that’s been enough to get me to come back to it a few times.
Thanks for sharing. This is a definite wishlist and I hope it succeeds.
Pokemon was a fad and no copycat will ever come near its heights.
