I've been going to conferences for 20 years. Not one person I've spoken to enjoyed the loud music during socials. In fact, almost everyone tells me that they'd rather have no music at all. They just want to have conversations with other people.

I could understand if the socials' venues had a dance floor, but if all you can do there is sip drinks while standing around or sitting around, anyway, then please make it possible to have conversations without screaming directly into each others ears.

@afilina I think many conference organizers don't reflect on the target audience for a specific conference enough. I went to business focussed eCommerce events where people enjoyed DJs & bands on stage a lot. But that's a totally different type of people as if you host a tech conference. (And I agree with you that I personally want the talks.)

@afilina yes, i agree, BUT... when theres no background music of any kind the neighbours table(s) can easily listen in to what youre saying...

im obviously not the guy that talks on his smartphone in busses either...

ps: i would rather not hear your private conversation besides me in places i cant escape... to all bus talkers, stfu, especially on your mobile devices.

@afilina oh yes, but limited to that. I find that far too many speaker dinners happen in loud locations, with speakers leaving far earlier than they want because it's just unbearably loud.

@parttimenerd I was once stuck on a boat where the speaker dinner was unbearably loud with no ability to leave early. I will start factoring that in. If it's too hard to leave early or if there's the word "party" in it, I'll go elsewhere. It's getting worse the older I get too.

@afilina at a certain recent conference, speakers where going to the toilet to quiet down and set alarms to get out of the venue. The noise level reached over 90dB during the dinner, which is sad, because I want to have great conversations with the amazing people on my table

@Crell @afilina We had Andy McKee play a show at php|tek one time, in the evening. That was a fun time; people who weren't into it hung out elsewhere.

@sean @afilina That was the year I was there! I still have one of his albums. He was good, because it wasn't overwhelming and easy to have a conversation on the other side of the rotunda.
