My average step count has more than doubled since moving to Australia. It’s nothing to do with Australia — Hobart doesn’t beat Portland in transit or walkability — so much as not having a car. I’m going to try and avoid buying one as long as possible.
@collin winter is winding down over here and I am going to get the kids out with me on the bicycles. Maybe that could be your next, before a car, if Australia is friendly. We moved less than a year ago and decided to not buy car as well!
@hacrods i’m definitely going to get a bike, but honestly, Hobart is not great for it. Not a lot of lanes period, no separated lanes, and no greenways that I’ve seen. The transit and cycling situation in Portland was significantly better than what’s going on here.
@collin yeah. I was thinking here to myself the difference between where we are and Australia. Australia don’t strike me as bike friendly and I am in place extremely metro and bike friendly! Not to mention we were able to find a rental a block away from the metro and pharmacy, and 3 easy walking blocks away from a good supermarket! That has proved really important for us to be able to live without a car.
