Another odd trend I'm observing: students don't understand how to work with plain text any longer.

The concept of wrapping text to fit an 80 char terminal gives them trouble. Many resort to random websites where they paste their text into and that will insert line breaks in the middle of the word at exactly 80 chars.

Using a text editor to, uhm, edit text is, at this point, completely foreign to them.

Weird.

@jschauma I’ve run in to this quite often. One lesson that helps them learn is to have them email their id_ed25519.pub to themselves / each other, then guess why what they sent is different from what the recipient receives.

Then I ask them to figure out how to send a simple string of text without it getting messed up to see what kinds of ideas they get.

Gmail’s the worst for that.
