people talk about how USB-C standardisation saved us from needing different cables for stuff, but I also feel like a lot of people forget that "I might need USB Micro A, USB-C, or Lightning depending on which phone it is" was already orders of magnitude better than the insanity we used to deal with in the 2000s.

these are two real phone cables that I used to own. they only worked with a specific range of Sony Ericsson phones. (and don't get me started on charger cradles)

@gsuberland yea it was nuts. Same manufacturers just changing shit all the damn time for no reason. You ever had to buy one of those third party everything cables that looked like a cat-o-ninetails?
@arichtman oh yikes yeah, and those kits where it came with a single plug and then three different barrel jacks on it, and then a box full of random pluggable charger pieces for all the different phones. and there were at least a dozen in the kit.

@gsuberland @arichtman Dude. That's back when I was on a team that did forensics work. If was a fucking nightmare.

We had a literal tackle box for all the dumbass cables. Every so often we'd buy a new drawer full of cables.
