Yes, I know my experience is far from universal in the US, but I’ve never had a job where I didn’t have decent PTO. Even working grocery and retail when I was young it was pretty good. Later for a hospital system I was getting 26 days + 9 paid holidays. Now I get 28 days + 11 paid holidays. These PTO policies apply to everyone too, from housekeeping to maintenance to licensed staff.

I haven’t looked into it, but don’t quite a few US states and localities also have their own PTO laws? I very much wish the US had federal laws in this regard, because I know there are many bad actors employing people

The US has no mandatory time off. PTO is uncommon, but also a “benefit”, not mandatory.

Washington State has mandatory sick time accrual (1 hour per 40 worked), which is paid time off. But that equates to less than 12 days per year.

I agree with you that we need to do better, but with everything else going on, I’m inclined to change countries if/when i can afford to.
