Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for a delightful Geomob Berlin.

Here's our recap of the evening.

First things first, thanks to hosts UP42 https://up42.com for sharing their office with us.

2/ Our first speaker was a Dave Whittingham (a past best speaker winner!). Dave returned to share his story trying to build a basic, map-based travel sharing tool for a cycling trip.

Unfortunately good intentions don't always yield a great product, and he shared lessons learned with us in his talk.

3/ Our next speaker was Ayesha Anwar who spoke about flood mapping using SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) which has the benefit of detecting flooding through clouds and at night.

4/ Third speaker of the evening was Finn Geiger from Mapular https://mapular.com describing the challenges they faced in quickly rendering massive amounts of POI data. After experimenting with DuckDB they eventually built a much simpler solution.

5/ Benjamin Trigona-Harany was our next speaker and he gave a very entertaining talk about his hobby project of mapping Ottoman transportation networks. Lots of beautiful and interesting old maps in this talk.

The audience later awarded this talk the SplashMaps best speaker prize 👏👏👏

@geomob this is soooo cool 🥺 I've been wanting to make something like this for a long time now

Also tagging @jerseybastion since he's on the fediverse!

@majdal Happy you find it interesting. It's a bit of a niche topic!
@jerseybastion I've been trying to find more info on the tram system in Damascus, Beirut, Aleppo, etc... for years. It's nice to see its extensions as well.
@majdal I am reasonably confident that I have documented the routes of the Ottman-era Damascus, Beirut, Tripoli, Baghdad and Najaf lines correctly, but I have no information on where the trams stopped along those routes. If you have ever come across that information, I would love to capture it.
@jerseybastion i have some of the trams! Let's email about this.
