As reported earlier, Afghan forces launched cross-border attacks on Pakistani border posts Thursday night, prompting Pakistan to respond with airstrikes against military targets in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia early Friday. Islamabadโ€™s defense minister said Pakistan has now run out of โ€œpatienceโ€ and considers itself in "open war" with Afghanistan.

Both sides are now trading heavy fire.

Some Afghan state and local media outlets have reported that Afghan forces struck a Pakistani "nuclear facility" and a military base in Faisalabad, Nowshera, Jamrud and the Abbottabad area of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. If confirmed, the target appears to be the Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Oncology and Radiotherapy (INOR) in Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

In addition, Iranian state media, specifically IRNAโ€™s Afghanistan desk, is reporting claims that Hibatullah Akhundzada, the supreme leader of Afghanistan, may have been killed during Pakistani airstrikes in Kabul, citing Afghan-linked sources.
