Oof. Episode 3 of Dusk Beyond the End of the World starts off really bad. So bad I had to stop watching after the start and write this down to let off some steam.
Protagonist Akira, who was powerless against soldiers of OWEL who are armed with automatic rifles, as established in the prior two episodes, just seem to waltz into a high security prison complex(!) with little effort. With no explanation, he just appears at the exact cell he needs to be, takes out the sole guard with little effort and frees a slave girl?!
Then it gets even more egregious. The prison raises the alarm but they can run out all the way to the gate with nearly no guards at every fucking checkpoint, doorways? A department store has more security personnel than this.
In which, of course the local one-dimensional sadist villain governor type awaits them with a bunch of armed guards at the gate.
Akira, with a shock stick he picked up earlier, frees himself from the guard who grabbed him, runs to the local villain boss and BEGS him to let them go… JFC… You could just zap that fucker in the throat take his gun and hold him to gunpoint. But weak-ass starts to BEG? After all the determination to ditch his OP android waifu to go save slave girl from a high max prison on his own?!
The villain decides to have the slave girl killed as it seems she means a lot to the protag, but does the typical trope of exposition.
With that cliched delay, the bunch gets saved by the OP android girl who, instead of massacring the crap out of the evil prison guards like she did in the first episode, just slices off their gun barrels, let them flee. And, again, not killing the remaining local villain boss like she did with his just as sadistical cousin in the first episode, but launches him with a kick to the nearby latrine.
Leaving witnesses alive while they are on the run.
That after they showed us she could burn their enemies into atoms and take half a mountain in the background with it in an earlier encounter. If these are sadistic fuckers who would kill entire villages to keep them under the thumb, why not eliminate them on the spot?
So WTF did I just watch? Why is this so dumb and bad?
I switched it off. Maybe I’ll watch the rest of this clown car of an episode later. This seem to be a PA Works original for its anniversary, with only 12 episodes. I fear the storytelling might not improve after an interesting start and is sooner to fall apart.
