I'm sorry, but my read is pretty deeply that this is Anthropic using a mundane contract dispute to run marketing about AI alignment and safety.

They already dropped their "safety pledge" citing the tired old inevitably saw, partner with Palantir, and their products were already used in the illegal and immoral raid on Venezuela.

A major Pentagon–Anthropic showdown is underway. The Pentagon is pushing for Claude to enable mass AI surveillance + autonomous drones, threatening a supply-chain-risk label or a defense production act takeover if they don’t. Ultimatum was issued for tomorrow. Anthropic just refused. https://www.anthropic.com/news/statement-department-of-war

This whole thing smells of bad-faith LessWrong chaff about having morals.

Anthropic is a public benefit LLC registered in the State of Delaware.

This puts them alongside other Delaware PBLLCs like Bluesky, OpenAI, Warby Parker, a wholely owned subsidiaries of Proctor & Gamble and Danone, and many others. The laws around PBLLCs in Delaware are infamously lax, with very little oversight provided.
