ok no seriously i'm all up for open source stuff and owning your tech and not letting big tech control you and stuff

but android is horrendous, it never worked right for me, it's always full of crapware, the bootloaders are often blocked or are a mess to unblock, flashing images usually resorts in me losing any sort of "device verification" so i can't do payments and stuff, i can't really enjoy it.

linux on mobile looks really cool but i still hold back from it because every single time i ask someone to get me help about it, they always either recommend me a weird crapware phone sold in 2012 with partial support (no NFC, no camera, no microphone, nothing) or some new phone but it's just the same android kernel with LESS of the OS-hardware integration i'd like. (i could also buy one of those really expensive linux phones that don't work very well or are severely underpowered)

iOS, right now, is sadly, my best option. I don't care about customization and I can always disable stuff I don't care about, it does the job consistently and even though liquid glass is liquid ass, it still feels more consistent than android

@nelson I’ve been using iOS for a while over android, started a little challenge on the 11th… I can definitely understand why you prefer it because iOS just doesn’t bother you nearly as much as android. Literally every time I would open the photos app Google would tell me to back my stuff up to their bullshit proprietary servers… to which I told them to fuck off, of course. And considering that android is going in the direction of "you want third party apps? Fuck you that’s not gonna be an option anymore" I see no reasonable reason to use it over iOS…. Android just bothers the living hell out of me for no good reason.

@DavidsCreation iOS really feels like

"okay, i'll get out of your way, do ya thing"

i really don't like to defend Apple because they're really fucking evil, but there's a huge difference between the way Apple sells things and Android companies sell things

Apple is more like "hey, we have a cool service", you can just say "no thanks, i do not care" and it'll often just shut up

Android phones, specially huawei and xiaomi and all their million sub-brands, are always like "DUDE, LOOK, THERE'S SO MANY OPTIONS! SO MANY THINGS, PLEASE USE OUR SERVICE, DUDE" while cramming ADs into everything, and being horrible, and installing apps into my phone without any permission.

Apple can give me access to their music making app and their drawing app and i'd be glad to try it just because i know it's not going to force me into getting some dumb subscription and it's going to just work on the hardware.

But if my Android phone wants me to try... "ShareTronk Plus Premium", some random shitware that's either sponsored adware/spyware, or some garbage subscription service app, I'll legitimately not even bother looking at it for more than a second.

@nelson That’s the thing. Apple and android marketing is completely different…. Apple is a product price first company whereas Google for example is an advertisement first company. That’s why Apple charges unreasonable rates, they make products that don’t get in your way. Android phones do which is why most of them are cheap and riddled with spyware… case in point Samsung literally has Israeli spyware on their phones.

@DavidsCreation That was genuinely what made me realize just how much Google was ruining the tech world, and it is that Google was always, and always will be, an advertisement company.

Their main source of money was never their software or their subscription cloud, it was always their ability to do insane amounts of calculations and sell your information to whoever wants to pay for it.

Apple might suck, but they at least do actually want to sell a product that's at least meant to feel good and cause as less discomfort as possible, even if their choices are dubious and suck.

I think we all failed as a society when we allowed for-profit companies in our houses, our social lives, our governments.

@nelson Yep. Not to mention the fact of things like battery life. I have two phones, an "old" iPhone 12, and a Google Pixel 9…. The iPhones battery lasts longer.
