ok, so the Sony CMT-M100MD can only do Type I tapes :< akko has a couple pre-recorded TDK KR-C90 Cr02 tapes that it can play okay, but totally wont try record it
and also the belts are slowly getting cooked, need to service it (and maybe power it off when not used to prevent overheating
yeah, amount of flutter it makes is JUST BAD! also, rewind/fast-forward is so weak it can't spin the cassette.
it is quite modular, but also very dirty :<
cleaned and serviced and assembled it back, caps are mostly good or acceptable
quite an easy maintenance, but it was hard to do an open frame test, all the ribbons are too short

fun stuff: the cassette mechanism on this stereo is a rotating type, and akko would expect it to have exactly the same performance on both sides..

but no, when it is playing B side (rotated to a reverse position), it sounds very much off, without any highs. wonder if all the compact bookshelf stereos are actually not good and built to a price point, or it is this specific unit is way out of alignment (or mebbe the ribbon is damaged)

and it also chewed the tape right after akko cleaned the unit :<

@yottatsa I've just read about this rotating head thingy for the first time, weird, I'd think linear motion would be simpler. Can you adjust both head's offset from the rotation axis and position of this axis?
@kauzerei the only adjustment is two screws that are on the top of head assembly, rotating in opposite direction will adjust azimuth, in same direction will adjust offset

@kauzerei as for why rotating 180 degrees and not shifting.. imho its this way the distance between tracks will be constant, and it will only need single erase head. shifting mechanism would prolly need more adjustments..

wonder how high-end tape decks are made, mebbe 4-track heads?

@yottatsa

What do we have here? A compact stereo system with radio, cassette player, CD player, and amplifier.

@yottatsa supreme analog Rick Roll. 🙌

@joelh that is the only label-made tape akko has and doesn’t care about much, so it will be good for testing

it was bought specifically for rickroll tho, yess
