The book "Borderlands Curanderos" by Jennifer Koshatka Seman was a great look into what role folk healers played in the early borderlands. Due to the economic misfortune in the borderlands the people were often forced to rely on the curanderos. #hist416
@NoahJohnson I agree- Seman shows that curanderos weren't just healers, but essential figures in communities where poverty and limited access to formal medicine shaped daily life. In Borderlands Curanderos, their importance really highlights how faith, care, and survival were deeply connected in the borderlands.
Do you think people turned to curanderos mainly out of necessity, or did cultural and spiritual trust play an equally strong role in their influence?
