I've figured for a while that Trump will try to control the midterms via a "we need to shut it down until we can figure out what the hell is going on" pretense, just as he justified his proposed Muslim ban. The way Trump operates, he can justify from the thinnest of excuses. From literally nothing, really.

I still have some hope that the worst abuses won't happen, or that if they are attempted the states will leverage their power to rebuff it.

Breaking WaPo: Pro-Trump activists who say they are in coordination with the White House are circulating a 17-page draft executive order that claims China interfered in the 2020 election as a basis to declare a national emergency that would unlock extraordinary presidential power over voting. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/02/26/trump-elections-executive-order-activists/

@jerkob1000 it’s a pretty common tactic it seems: moratorium until we can study it, then when the study comes out, pretend the study said what you wanted it to and just do the thing. That’s been happening in UT with all sorts of topics.

They seem to be counting on the people who only kind of pay attention will assume the study justifies their action. Or maybe just adds an air of reasonability to placate moderates.
