Ranking Linux desktop environments for 2026 !

PeerTube
happy birthday to your YouTube channel and also thank you for actively running your channel on PeerTube!
Cinnamon for the win!

@berlinviking

It's obviously a matter of taste, but what makes Cinnamon an absolute no-go for me is the fact that you don't have an option to restore your windows after a reboot.

Otherwise, it's fine.

@thelinuxexperiment

Aw man, no love for my guy Xfce lol

I tend to gravitate towards it because KDE is still overwhelming to me. I tried Cinnamon but my Xfce desktop was very similar but used less resources and was already familiar, so why bother IMO if I'm not getting anything from the switch.

I setup skippy-xd/libinput gestures for when I'm using my laptop undocked, then just use it like a regular desktop when docked.

Its wonderful, fast, and super configurable. I did add a system sound to play when switching workspaces to help my brain lol that is the only animation I'd like back from my GNOME days. I just can't back the direction of GNOME these days tbh.

Debian Xfce ftw!
@thelinuxexpGeriment GNOME , I would put in the No way, never category, and because Cosmic copies GNOME, I would place it there also. Cinnamon is a great choice, as, of course ,is KDE.
How dare you putting GNOME into the top tier! No way to put it higher than "never ever" ... ... except that I am using Phosh, which is basically GNOME for phones and running the default GNOME applications, which become better and better convergent with every new version and I actually enjoy it very much! So forget what I said and let it in top tier, please. :) It is kinda funny to see me enjoying KDE on desktop, GNOME on phone, but not vise versa. They definitely have all there place to shine.
The mate chapter has a dot instead of :
I'm team GNOME and Cinnamon. In my opinion, KDE needs too many resources, but it's also nice.
@thelinuxexperiment I'm really impressed with the pace of development over at COSMIC. I see them moving up a tier in the next edition πŸ™‚
@[email protected] Really looking forward to installing it on my second computer, as Gnome is just 90% of what I would want it to be with its lack of customization and the way some things are too difficult for what they are.
New does not mean better. It just means new.

@thelinuxexperiment

'Desktop environments? I use the terminal for everything!'

πŸ™ƒ

@[email protected] Terminals are still the sexiest part of my computer. But which terminal? This might be stuff for another ranking video
@thelinuxexperiment Really helpful. It's good that he says it is his own opinion. I still prefer XFCE over some of those I have tested (Gnome, Cinnamon, Plasma a while ago) and besides his opinion he also shows some objectiveness towards his comparison. I like that. I now think I might need to test Plasma again, there's been a lot of updates since I tested it.
I keep coming back to Gnome:)
Yay. All That choice :-p! This is the stuff that keeps me interested in computers. I use 3 different desktop environments on different machines. I'm not going to mention them, just explore and see what suits you. And 'tiling' is a feature not a 'type' of desktop environment for me. Maybe if you see someone *only* using the keyboard to do his stuff mention 'tiling window manager' :-p.
