"Kansas is sending letters to trans people telling them that their licenses will be revoked as of tomorrow and that they risk arrest for driving on a suspended license.

This is pure cruelty."

"Should any transgender person be caught driving without a valid license, they could face a class B misdemeanor carrying up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Kansas already requires county jails to house inmates according to sex assigned at birth."

Kansas now has some of nation's strictest anti-trans laws, banning bathroom access and ID changes

The legislation bars individuals who are born without the ability to produce eggs for reproduction from using women’s restrooms, locker rooms and other gender-specific areas — and classifies intersex people as disabled. Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly vetoed the bill but the Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature narrowly voted to override and put it into law.

"And any trans person arrested under this will be placed in units of their sex assigned at birth. For trans women, this means v coding, rape, and sexual assault. They'll also be denied access to hormones and forced to detransition. I can't begin to tell you just how cruel all this is."

"When we hear: Dems shld stop focusing on trans issues b/c it's woke & people aren't ready: we're not talking minor inconvenience. We're not talking microaggressions: they're stripping IDs from trans people.

You shld care b/c trans people are human beings w/inalienable human rights, but even if you don't, you shld care about this for your own safety.

1st they violate rights of those they think no one will fight for, then they come for rest of us."

"Very much not the point but listing sex at birth on a document meant to identify you right now is utterly useless from a security standpoint. but of course this is about cruelty and forced outing of queer private lives."

"Because of Nat'l register, trans folks can't move to another state and get a new license until they remove suspension on their KS license.

They can't even escape this by moving to another state.

I can't begin to describe how fucked up this law is. People can't drive to work, school, the DMV to fix this w/out threat of being arrested for driving on suspended license. It literally removes ability for trans KSns to participate in society."

"As of tonight, licenses of trans people across KS are being invalidated en masse, overnight criminalization of an entire group of people for going about our lives. It’s often said you never know you’re living through history, so let me assure you: it’s happening now.

Not just driving: voting, work, travel, picking up pkg, applying for credit, applying for job, renting, filling Rx, visiting loved ones in hospital. Not expired, but legally invalid."

"The letters arrived today. Not last week, not two weeks ago when it was passed or a week ago after the veto was overridden. They arrived the night before the changes were live so no one could do anything about it, just to rub it in and be able to say they’d given notice."

"Let me say this: fairly high chance a court will stay the law & you will forget the Kansas Legislature tried to criminalize nearly every trans person in the state.

That will be a mistake.

Youth gender-affirming care bans were found obviously unconst'l first time a court looked at them. What changed? SCOTUS are right wing fanatics and GOP HATES that you have rights under constitution.

They are coming for all of us. Openly. Lawlessly."

"To do this, anti-trans lawmakers in Kansas moved fast to change the law, overrode the governor’s veto, and pushed for the legal changes to go into effect nearly immediately. That kind of power—to void gender on official documents, to compel gender conformity—is terrifying and it will not stop here."

" 'The persecution is the point,' said Rep. Abi Boatman, a Wichita Democrat and the only transgender member of the Legislature, who received the [Kansas Dept of Revenue] notice on Wednesday.' To underscore that: a Kansas state legislator is among those whose driver’s license will be voided.

Officials say they expect around 1,800 people to have their identity documents revoked."

"I've literally no patience for anyone saying trans KNs 'just' have to go to DMV & get a new license. There was no time given and no process in place. Letters were sent to some whose licenses were invalidated, but not all. There was no grace period & many weren't notified. More or less a mathematical inevitability people will be charged for suspended licenses who had no idea a legally issued license was invalidated overnight for being trans."

"...because it's Kansas, and it's a Bad State so it's not surprising for bad things to happen here, it's our fault for living here anyway and trying to fight back and not just moving away (with all the disposable income we all have, you know a rich state like Kansas).

...responses like 'lol it's Kansas what did you expect' or 'Kansas deserves to be hit by more tornadoes' are actually not helpful or comforting to people being harmed most right now?"
