The Four Tops got their start in 1954 at a Detroit House Party as the Four Aims, before changing their name to avoid confusion with the Ames Brothers. The Four Tops worked with a few other record companies before signing with Motown in 1964 and their breakthrough hit "Baby I Need Your Loving" was released later the same year.

The group made up of Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Lawrence Payton, and Levi Stubbs stayed together until Lawrence Payton's death in 1997. [1/3]

Their first no. 1 hit was "I Can't Help Myself(Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" in 1965. They had continued commercial success for Motown for decades, with their last charting hit coming in 1981 at 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Among R&B royalty, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. There are no remaining living Four Tops. Obie Benson passed away in 2005, Levi Stubbs passed in 2008, and in 2024 Duke Fakir was the final member to pass on. [2/3]
