If Labour followed its own logic, it would now step aside and let the Greens walk home in this crucial by-election. It is hard to imagine how Starmer and co could have made a bigger fist of this - and of everything. My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

How is Reform’s charmless candidate still a contender in Gorton and Denton? Ask Labour

This byelection should have been a stroll for Keir Starmer’s party. Instead, all hope of defeating Matt Goodwin now seems to lie with the Greens, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The Guardian
"The Reform candidate, Matt Goodwin, is among the most unprepossessing people I’ve ever met. He came across as utterly charmless and squirming with discomfort. When he tried to smile, his lips stretched, but no other part of his face seemed to move."
@georgemonbiot.bsky.social I surprised that you're proud enough of this to self-quote. It's not the way he smiles that makes him a monstrous option.

@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

"The leadership’s key objective is not stopping Farage, but frightening people into voting Labour"

Very true. New Labour really has nothing else left. They are a howling void of selling out to neoliberalism.

@georgemonbiot.bsky.social @cstross I assume Labour in the UK is making the same choice as Labour in Australia:
Between coming up with some actual merit or an identity other than Not-the-feral-neocons™ or furiously attacking the greens because they threaten that same trademark.
They always choose attack because it’s easier than actual leadership.
