The language we use in the office matters. On the latest episode of the #GCAPodcast, Kim Scott told me a story of a leader who realized he had never promoted a woman to a leadership position. To his credit, he assumed the problem was with his system, not with the talent. After an investigation, he found that while both candidates had the same results, one, a man, was called a real leader, and the other, a woman, was referred to as a “mother hen.” It may seem like there’s nothing wrong with calling someone nurturing and supportive. But when it came to promotions, “a leader” always beat out the nurturer. Because language defines power and power shapes careers. Are you ensuring words don’t cause bias in your team?
