Absolutely insane how many Reddit threads of people asking for advice about important money or legal issues have so much bad information in them. For the love of god, I know it's expensive but sometimes you just need to suck it up and call an accountant or attorney and pay them for an hour of their time. This stuff is so jurisdiction specific too that random redditors really can't adequately advise you on your situation!!! This has been your regular Capricorn PSA to trust the professionals.
@TeamMidwest Even worse is people offering relationship or psychological adivce based on a Reddit post. I find Reddit endlessly entertaining, but also profoundly and consistently horrifying in terms of what it reveals about learned helplessness and naiveté.
@daskey oh my truth is that I LIVE for these kinds of posts but you have to be in very specific micro demographic subreddits for the high quality relationship discussions. Big general population subreddits are a total mess for these. For example, during my divorce I found r/divorce to be wildly alienating because of the levels of misogynist sentiment from the baseline redditor but r/divorce_women had a lot of relatable and useful information.
