So I had to order a new box of personal #checks. Since I only use about a half-dozen a year, this box of 80 should last me at least a decade. That got me thinking, does anyone still rely heavily on them for their purchases?

@KanaMauna The two times I got a cheque was when I visited a research centre in the US (2013) and they gave me cheques to cash in to cover my accommodation (one for each month). Exciting the bank branch with stacks of 20s made me feel anxious and a bit like in a movie.
Oh, and I had traveler's cheques when visiting the US the first time when I was 14 or so (1994? around then).

Edit: added years

@drchaos

Traveler's cheques were being replaced by ATMs right about the time of your visit. Those were far more inconvenient than personal checks and really need to go away.

@KanaMauna ATMs are really useless if you are visiting and don't have a card yet that works internationally - because you are younger than, dunno, 16 and only can withdraw from your home bank on a different continent in a different currency.
