give me your suggestions for a security camera system that's easy to operate for someone with zero computer skills, is secure, and allows for remote access (yes, yes I know).

@Kels_316 I’d like my unicorn to be fluro orange thanks.

Seriously though, the UniFi camera stuff looks pretty nice?

@jpm MIL needs something, they've had some attempted break ins recently. Only reason for remote is so we could get in and help sort out any dramas without being on-site.
@Kels_316 @jpm I got my parents eufy. I also got them AmpliFi (UniFi consumer) so in theory I can can bridge into their LAN
@drew @Kels_316 I haven’t looked at Eufy in detail, does it do local recording, storage, and processing? Or is it cloud-only?
@jpm @Kels_316 local to SD card on base station. Cloud sub optional (though cloud account not)
@jpm @Kels_316 if it helps, my insurer “required” me to install a security system and I personally chose Eufy for that. I use UniFi for my cameras, but I have Eufy for the stupid security stuff.

@jpm @drew @Kels_316 I'm on Eufy, albeit on a homebase2, which has been superseded. Do not recommend. A lot of performance and connectivity issues, and some lies about security a few years ago.

They can do local storage and processing, but I've always had connectivity issues if the NVR doesn't have internet connectivity. So in practice they require cloud connectivity. I've never had to pay them though.

Bugs in the app worsen the above issues. The app lies, a lot, particularly in how it displays detected events, always reporting 'none detected' then reporting more with every refresh in a FILO manner. Movement and doorbell response times are glacial, alerts come many minutes after events. Movement detection of my cameras is insensitive even on maximim. I've had other issues too, like phantom doorbell chimes.

@noodle @jpm @Kels_316 ah crap, sorry to hear that.

@drew @jpm @Kels_316 And that's before we add the issues it has with my pfsense firewall's NAT. Most saliently, it broke notifications.

Next network rejig the doorbell is swapping to Tapo.

@noodle @jpm @Kels_316 I’ve not had that issue at all, all my stuff is door and motion sensors (and robot vacuum). My parents have not reported any issues either. I definitely believe that once the internet is out it’ll all go to pants, but I haven’t seen it.

@drew Homebase 2 or 3? Either way that gives me some hope that the next network rejig may fix some of it.

I have a doorbell and 2 cameras. The homebase is on my iot network currently (things were a little better when it was on the core network, but only a little).

@noodle only a 2. But I don’t do complicated things.
@drew Somewhat eerily the app just stopped loading in GrapheneOS
