I guess a LOT of people never heard of #IRC and how simple it is, instead of going to lengths to use complex chat services so they can ditch #Discord...

As much as I like IRC, I wouldn't call it simple.
The commands are enough to scare most non-technical people away.
It's also text-only; image support is pretty much expected these days.

@jmmonteiro @faraiwe I'd say the "feature richness" of discord is way more overwhelming IMO.
"They" are just used to it - and some are unwilling to outsource certain features to a forum or the like, that's all.

I'm not trying to praise IRC but anything is better than discord and I never understood the hype around it.

I agree, it's a very maximalist design.
IRC is probably a bit too alien for someone who didn't grow up with it and just used discord. The lack of more image-oriented features might be off-putting as well.
Matrix is probably more similar, but it's much heavier to self-host.
Maybe XMPP could strike a better balance between features and resource usage.
