The rows of townhouses under the old IRT Flushing line (built up between 1907-1917 ish, now known as the 7 line) always fascinated me. While on the road directly leading to a major Beaux-art court building for the district, under-train thoroughfare was hardly prime residential estate even back in the day. Yet some of the buildings here were obviously quite upscale compared to the public housing projects a short print away.
I wonder what the rationale was back in the 1920's and 30's for this development pattern.
