@theleftistlawyer (but last time I was pulled over on my bicycle in the dark of February, I ...did not successfully shut up. Now, soon as said cop figured out I was a white lady ... it was boring... I did refrain, when he said something about somebody having reported somebody stealing things with a bicycle "do you think anybody believes that 'fits the description' anymore??" or saying "what? You new here? EVERYBODY knows me and this bike..."
But I am practicing.

@theleftistlawyer Before it gets to that, you can also say "Am I free to leave" (and leave if you are free). Once they say no or detain you, invoke your rights -- and if they trick you into talking, invoke them again and shut up again.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to talk to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions. You have the right to have a lawyer with you during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish. If you decide to answer questions now without a lawyer present, you have the right to stop answering at any time.

Just know that by law, if you cannot afford an attorney, the state MUST supply one for you. That said, public defenders (as they are called) are not the best of the breed, and are notoriously overworked. But still, it's best to just tell them to get you a lawyer, then shut up 'til you get one. My experience has been, that is sometimes enough for them to just let you go. Emphasis on SOMETIMES. And if they don't, you'll soon have a lawyer to talk to.

Don't try to appeal to their humanity either. If they have any left it's so deeply suppressed by their indoctrination ... er ... training and the context of their working environment, it can't be reached.

I made this mistake as a younger activist, and inadvertently leaked info that they could have used to hurt our movement. Just imagine they're robots, and say nothing without legal advice.
