I guess a LOT of people never heard of #IRC and how simple it is, instead of going to lengths to use complex chat services so they can ditch #Discord...
@faraiwe
As much as I like IRC, I wouldn't call it simple.
The commands are enough to scare most non-technical people away.
It's also text-only; image support is pretty much expected these days.

@jmmonteiro compare that to running a matrix server.

I'll take IRC, if only due to running requirements (anyone got a 486 with 8mb of RAM??)

Also, show me a "non technical person" running their *own* chat service server, if IRC commands scare them away.

Anyways, yeah, no.

@faraiwe
I'm aware of those.
You're talking about complexity in hosting.
I'm talking about complexity from a user's perspective.
Two very different things.

@jmmonteiro I fear you may not be thinking of the same things your words convey. I mean self-host your own server of a chat service, without needing to dig into remote hosted virtual servers, etc etc etc.

Whatever else you thought you read is completely off.

@faraiwe
Now that we've established that we were referring to different things, have you considered that the people who are going through the pains of hosting more complex solutions have indeed heard of IRC, and made a conscious decision to host something a bit more friendly to the end user?

@jmmonteiro I did, and I ignored their fluffy plight supporting corporate take over of our rights and democracy, thank you.

We are DONE here.

At least you are
