Chilling! This article is less about LinkedIn and more about Peter Thiel's Persona corp (which was also supposed to be responsible for Discord's new identification system) and their obscene data collection & sharing of personal data among mostly US "partner" orgs and processors, regardless of where you're based...

@toxi We shouldn't be offloading verification to corporations.

Bots, spam, identity theft and ransom...These are problems. There are hundreds of thousands of kidnapped slaves in Southeast Asia being tortured into scamming Americans and Europeans due in large part to our disinterest in identity verification. The tech community should start caring about those people.

If we don't, politics will do it for us without our input, and we're going to get more of this fascist dystopia.

@txtx Some form of rhetorical levers, playbooks/phrasebooks are urgently needed to counter the ones used to push authoritarian policies/biases worldwide. Everywhere they're the same, incl. the use of "protecting children" as lever to push ID verification for everyone (outsourced or not), which of course has nothing to do with the former, yet it's the only phrase mentioned by politicians and the media over and over again and is hard to argue with if taken at face value... It must be possible to come up with similarly viral and hard-to-debunk rhetorical devices for more "solarpunk" goals...
