#PhotoOfTheDay: Meltwater Turns #Iceberg A-23A Blue

The year that iceberg A-23A first broke away from Antarctica's Filchner Ice Shelf, Ronald Reagan was president of the United States.

Forty years later, the massive tabular berg—one of the largest and longest-lived bergs ever tracked by scientists—is sopping with blue meltwater and on the verge of complete disintegration.

#A23a is currently the world’s largest iceberg, a colossal slab of ice roughly 1,500 square miles in size that recently broke free after being grounded for decades.

Since 2023, it has been drifting beyond Antarctic waters, captured in a massive rotating ocean vortex known as a Taylor Column.
