If I may ask, what neighborhood did you imagine them living in in San Francisco? I lived in the Castro and then the Mission around when Jamie was born.

I am especially glad the ending worked for you...

I think I pictured Serena, Mae and Jamie living in the Haight or Inner Sunset. Or maybe Richmond. It was the 2000s, a moment where rents actually came down in SF somewhat, and I think they could afford a decent-ish place in one of those hoods.
