I wish we weren't at a point where our public institutions exclusively use privately owned services for official announcements.

DCPS announced a two-hour delay. On Instagram. (Can't see the post without an account.)

Which I learned about through my school's Parent and Teachers United group. On WhatsApp.

DCPS has a webpage, but it's not on there.

😭

A friend of mine is running for City Council, and if she wins I am going to personally lobby HARD for a city-wide focus on public institutions utilizing public digital infrastructure. DC can have its own ActivityPub service/server. Sure it can repost to private crap, but public first.
@gregatron5 was noting this during dinner tonight. DCPS’ page should have a big “OPEN/CLOSED” status box at the top. Instead, we still get the notice on the page that is a “Best of the Web 2014” winner.

@IMGoph It also highlights “Tweets by @dcpublicschools“ and the last "tweet" was from 2017.

Oh, and now there's a small banner with a red outline highlighting the delayed opening.

@gregatron5 oh wow, you can teach some tricks to some old dogs!

(Bet the number of hits the site was getting went up 1000% and someone finally put 2 and 2 together.)
