9/11 was one week before my 21st birthday. It and the Iraq War shaped that period of my life.

The start of my teaching career was bracketed by Hurricane Katrina and the 2008 financial crisis.

What do they all have in common?

No one was held accountable.

It changed us, eroded our institutions, and we now expect and accept conflict of interest, corruption, and graft as normal.
