I cannot say this enough, I hate how basic respect and empathy isn't common sense. - The Lemmy Club

Seriously, I get curious about Conservative (specifically American Conservative) communities. About why they’re so liked. About why my family praises them so much and wants me to be a Trump-worshipping Conservative. But all I find is nonsensical AI slop, insanity, and asshole behavior. Treating minorities like they’re non-humans without feelings. Acting like white straight able-bodied people are superior to those who are either not white, not straight, not able-bodied, or none of the above. They have to be a certain way in order for them to be liked, and all I find is how they claim to be peaceful people, like how my ex said, that respect others, but a conservative teen group online literally raided a safe space for queer teens. They mostly claim to be respectful, but act like everyone is out to get them. They also complain about queer people who aren’t even hurting them and whine about how trans and gay people are “mentally ill”, and “Trump is the Messiah”. I have yet to find a pro-gay, pro-trans, anti-racist Conservative who aligns with my values, yet I get all that from a left-leaning person. And even some (SOME, not as much as the right-wingers/Conservatives) of the left-leaning people I know who aren’t fully left think people who try to be themselves are cringe, or are just anti-autistic/ableist. But this isn’t most leftists, especially the mostly left/“full” leftists.

And you’re not going to. That’s like looking for a flying submarine — the definitions of those words are contradictory.

That’s true, those people are something else. I guess I’m just trying to convince myself they aren’t all bad…
I think there can be tolerance of those not like you while still having strict traditional moral views but it is a delicate balance that most arent introspective enough to achieve. Having a particular moral view while acknowledging that well meaning people can have a different and don’t deserve destruction for disgreeing is definitely possible but when you add in the persecution complex of the Evangelicals the idea that everyone without their moral code wants them dead drives them to insanity, violence, and authoritarianism while delusionally thinking it is all self defense.
If it makes it any better, most are just insecure people who can’t figure out how to be happy, and need something to blame for it. It’s not really so much “I hate this group,” more of “I feel like my life isn’t going the way I want and things are scary, so I need a scapegoat” :/
The main problem is that they are told by their preachers and their political commentators that queer teenagers are literally hurting them. It is delusional but when everyone you put the most trust into is telling you a lie, you believe them. It is the epitome cult programming.

It’s not religion. (Or, at least, not mainly religion.)

It’s social media, which is effectively constructing a different reality for every user: one where everything you believe is correct, and reinforced to you with sources that appear legitimate, while at the same time keeping you as angry and radicalized as possible. Algorithmically-elevated content is going to eventually be proven to be one of the most harmful innovations in human history.

This is an adaption to survive in a world where being different is punished by the state.

Same.

And it’s only going to get worse as people resist regulation of corporate social media, the most effective tool for getting people to be outright dicks to each other for no good reason.

I really think that the defining difference is related to empathy. Either you are wired in a way to feel empathy towards “others”, or you aren’t. Most people who identify as conservative see those others as dangerous, and are unable to relate to their experience, or to imagine shared values.
I don’t think it’s a matter of common sense because many negative emotions are natural although they often have bad effects. It’s more a matter of values.

You made 4 mistakes Larry/Scotty:

  • Believed your framing can affect folks.
  • Believed in “respect”
  • Believed everyone has empathy
  • Believed in a myth the uneducated call “common sense.”
  • Preaching doesn’t work. Our brains naturally develop mechanisms to ignore contradictory evidence. There are few methods to mitigate this.
  • “Respect” is a cultural phenomena that is disciplined on very few cultures. It is not something people learn, you have to discipline it, early, before the backfire effect sets in.
  • Not everyone grows a frontal lobe, or the capacity to empathize. Sadly “Conservatives” tend to trend in the dark triads spectra.
  • Since you have just learned not everyone can empathize, you should now be aware the myth of “common sense” really cannot exist. Dehumanization isn’t common, yet Conservatives praxis something extraordinary. Whether they are aware of it or not, their senses are not “common,” not by a long shot. So please, stop believing on a shitty lie.
