(yes I know Canadian men's hockey culture isn't better, I didn't start watching hockey yesterday lmao)
There is also a weird belittling, and somewhat misogynist, attitude I am seeing in response to to this (especially with reference to Heated Rivalry fans) that goes like "oh those poor women who are fans of men's hockey, they don't know how toxic hockey culture is. they are living in fantasyland."
Women hockey fans understand very well how toxic the culture is; we enjoy a beautiful sport despite the men playing it. I think a lot of men don't understand the amount of relating to men, and participation in cultural things oriented towards and created by men, that most women have to do basically from the time that we are children (and I started watching hockey as a kid). For a long time, if we want to watch hockey it had to be men's hockey. If we want to watch a movie, it had to be a movie with a man protagonist. We related despite all of that, because the work was still amazing.
I think this is also missing the reason why women like Heated Rivalry (which I actually still haven't watched despite about 20 different people telling me to watch it at this point). It's pretty obvious for anyone who is familiar with BL works, but maybe not familiar to most hockey people. It's people who like men and who like hockey, but who know how badly men behave in the real world, especially towards women, and choosing to imagine something better. A story where complex characters playing an amazing game enter into a relationship as equals. The "as equals" part is important; this is a big aspect of BL's appeal over most het stories, for straight women. Unfortunately it is easier to write 2 men as full people in a full and equal relationship than it is to write a woman and a man in one.
It's appealing precisely because we all know how far away it is from the real world.
lmao

The U.S. women's hockey team said it is declining President Donald Trump's invitation to attend his State of the Union address, a day after the president jokingly told the U.S. men's hockey team that he would be impeached if he didn't also invite the women's team."We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S.
