Forum of Peoples and Social Movements begins in Cartagena, Colombia! #ICARRD20

Delegates representing peasants, Indigenous Peoples, artisanal fishers, pastoralists, and rural workers—from nearly 70 countries worldwide—have arrived in Cartagena for the 'Forum of Peoples and Social Movements: United for Land, Water, Territories and Dignity,' to be held from 22-23 February.

The Government of #Colombia has committed to building and globalizing the agenda for #AgrarianReform, says
Martha Carvajalino who is the Minister of Agriculture. "A popular reform that benefits peasants, Indigenous Peoples, fishers, pastoralists, and all those who work the land and feed the communities." #ICARRD20

On the sidelines of the #ICARRD20 being held in Cartagena from February 24-28, La Via Campesina (LVC), in collaboration with the International Planning Committee on Food Sovereignty (IPC), hosted two significant side events that provided a platform for social movements to present their visions and concrete proposals for enacting popular agrarian reform globally.

Twenty years later, #ICARRD20 offers a historic opportunity to reaffirm the importance of agrarian reform and rural development, to take stock of transformative examples of agrarian reform, to update the meaning of agrarian reform, and to forge a shared vision for popular, feminist, decolonial, and eco-social transformation.

The movements expressed appreciation for the Government of Colombia and Brazil for bringing agrarian reform back into the agenda of the international policy dialogue, and for including their voices in the conference process. #ICARRD20.

Yet, a central concern raised was the conflation of Indigenous Peoples with the vague concept of “local communities", in the final declaration of #ICARRD20.
