My ISP has given me free Netflix with Ads.

Anyone know if it is possible to block the ads at a DNS level?

I know it is possible for Channel 4 and a few other streaming services.

Virgin have also upgraded me to Gigabit fibre.

Which, as I wrote a few years ago, is mostly pointless.

I wonder when gigabit will actually be useful?

What's the point of Gigabit broadband?

(This is a curmudgeonly post which is going to look ridiculously outdated in a few years.) My yearly contract with my ISP has just come to an end, so it was time to shop around for a better deal. They presented me with the following monthly options: Drop to 100Mbps for the same price I'm paying today (£44) Keep at 350Mbps for a tenner more (£55) Rise to 500Mbps for a fiver more (£49) Go to GI…

@Edent I found having symmetric bandwidth was more useful than faster download. Currently with YouFibre and have Gigabit up&down. My phone has a wireguard tunnel open all the time to my home router (when not on wifi) and it is lightening fast.
@dan @Edent this. I find myself wanting higher downlink plans because most ISP have a 1/10 of that as uplink. And for selfhosting I want a faster uplink...
@peturdainn @dan @Edent Totally, I think the higher uplink would really be the attraction for me. We have 100 down and 40 up, and when backing up things (like photos) remotely it takes ages. Also with something like >500 up and a static IPv6 address/subnet it would make self hosting at home more convenient for a lot of people because you can skip the steps where you need to sign up for a VPS, deal with remote administration etc. and you still have enough bandwidth to serve people. (Depends of course if your ISP supports that kind of thing.)
