Like sure, it would be cool to have fibre to the premises… cool but boring. I lose my shit at how amazing it is that I get almost a gigabit down over coaxial (HFC NBN in Australia). The EE in me is all drooling at just how insane the technology is that makes this work.
Like look at this rats nest (yeah I know this is clean compared to some places). The top wires are power to the houses on my street and the bottom is the coax getting split between properties on my street for internet.
I get 950 megabits of downlink (and almost 100 up) off one of these cables that goes down the pole, into a pit that floods when it rains, and then comes up to my porch). Wtf? Coaxial cable is just crazy amazing. Everything is amazing. The modem frontend electronics is amazing. The dsp is amazing. Just wtf?
If it was fibre, I’d have the smug factor… but it’s just incredible to me that this even works. And it’s not like I’ll ever need more than a gigabit down right?… right?
